Efrain demonstrates his carving for the students and adults in Valley Park School District in Missouri.
Efrain Fuentes
Acclaimed wood-carver from Oaxaca, Mexico, Efrain Fuentes is available to give demonstrations to school districts, museums, and community groups on Oaxacan woodcarving.

Born and raised in San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca, Mexico, Efrain grew up surrounded by the work of his father, Epifanio Fuentes, the most renowned wood-carver in Mexico today. At a young age, Efrain, along with his brothers, learned to carve under the guidance of their father.

Today Efrain and his brother Zeny carve fanciful figures from wood and are well known for their own talent and accomplishments. Efrain participates in exhibitions, and gives presentations for adults and students.

Oaxacan Woodcarving: Innovation Meets Tradition
Participants learn about the rich Zapotec culture, especially the popular animal carvings from copal wood with their whimsical forms and bright colors. Efrain Fuentes shares the process of woodcarving and painting with the participants in his workshops in much the same way as his apprenticeship was served under his father's watchful eye. His friendly, interactive presentations feature a demonstration and participants are encouraged to ask questions. A hands-on component is also available. Mr. Fuentes' presentations are given in Spanish, so translation is required. If an interpreter is not available locally, CRIZMAC can provide one for an additional fee.
