Gente del Sol Guatemalan Weaving

Invite your students to learn about the the native culture of Guatemala and the importance of backstrap loom weaving in this country. The second part of the program uses student examples to introduce an weaving activity. Students will learn to make and warp a cardboard loom and create a weaving with many differenet stitches. In addition to the basic tapestry stitch (over-under), directions for making the slip-c knot, sumack loop, eqyptian knot, and fringe are included. The teacher's guide offers you all the information necessary to prepare and teach a comprehensive lesson. The lesson highlights several exmaples of student weavings that are sure to inspire your students' creativity. This is also a great unit to integrate with language arts, social studies, and/or Spanish. The Guatemalan Weaving lesson is part of the complete Gente del Sol curriculum (0600).
